Chapter 33

We all grabbed some of our main Magi gear and then headed out. It was entirely possible that we were being reckless. Maybe Karen and Simon and Master Shen wouldn't have approved. Not sure about Master O.G. He was pretty unpredictable and wild himself. Maybe he was cheering us on from wherever he was trapped, presumably somewhere in the realms of the Wyld.

It just felt like the enemy had been at least one step (and maybe three or four) ahead of us all along, and now we had a lead and a bunch of built-up frustration. Maybe it was time we did something.

We actually drove to Microsoft. I know that sounds kind of ridiculous, but it was true. The Microsoft campus was immense. It was made up of scores and scores of buildings covering miles just west and south of Redmond where Tre lived. Once upon a time, Redmond had been a relatively small and somewhat sleepy town east of Seattle. Then Microsoft had arrived and the first tech boom of the 90s. The place had completely transformed since, and the growing of both Microsoft and Redmond had never stopped.

To be honest, I couldn't really tell a lot of the buildings and sections of Microsoft from each other except from the air when I was flying above. There were just a lot of generic, brick, techy-looking buildings all over the place. I'd gone to visit once or twice, meeting Tre when he was doing some consulting work. There was actually pretty tight security all over the different campuses and divisions. Tens of thousands of people were employed, and they were some of the smartest and most cutting-edge computer developers in the world, covering everything from gaming to operating systems to search engines and apps. The section we were going to was the most secretive: Microsoft Experimental Projects division.

While Microsoft had almost always stuck to computers and software, they had also been open and interested in other ideas as well. After Google developed their own forays into tech outside of the world of computers, Microsoft jumped in as well. I had no idea what really went on inside that division of Microsoft, but according to Tre, it wasn't anything menacing and nefarious. No secret cloning labs. No weapons division.

We parked on the street near a green space nearby. The campus was conveniently full of little mini-parks and walking trails; the kind that were ubiquitous in the Pacific Northwest. We cut through the little mini-forest and gathered just outside of a rather tall, chain-link fence with razor wire at the top. Tre had assured us the fence was not electrified, which we verified for ourselves. Then we simply paused, listened for a few minutes, and before we put our plan into action.

Phase one was up to me. I looked at everybody, nodded my head, and then said a quick chant. Suddenly, I was in Bobcat form and the dark sky and surroundings lit up as my feline eyes took over. I sniffed the air for a moment or two to get my bearings.
